Gloucestershire and Herefordshire Motorhome Habitation Checks
Do I Need A Habitation Check/Service?
Do I Need A Habitation Check?
To get to a truthful answer, let’s start with a question regarding your investment. After all, you have probably laid out a large chunk of your savings, which must pay you back with happiness.
Like most of us, we work hard to play hard, and we have no desire to create drama. For me, the motorhome is key to my time building memories with my children.
So, the question is: Would you get on a boat if you knew it was neglected, with no service history? No.
At Mtec Project, having our annual habitation check is part of arranging the perfect holiday and most of us do their best to cover everything! Mtec Project recommends having the habitation check done at least once a year. Once an assessment has be completed it will be stored for future references, this gives us a bigger picture if problems occur.
So, let’s take a closer look at what is going to be checked and possibly serviced...

Post assessments may show some issues with the gas system of which in some cases be immediately dangerous (ID). The motorhome LPG Gas appliances and installations that are found to be ID, (Immediately Dangerous) or AR, (At Risk) will be classified as 'Unsafe Situation', requiring immediate action.

An example below is given of an (ID) Gas valve from a Thetford fridge, which was allowing fuel to escape near the burner. In this case the gas valve was capped-off and the owner of the motorhome was informed, who later requested the fridge to be repaired. In this case the fridge had been serviced alongside the new part (Gas Valve).

Vermin can also cause all sorts of problems.

One of the biggest problems that you hear is about Motorhome damp issues. Sadly some of the vans that come to me with such a problem are riddled with it, of which could have been avoided by having a simple Habitation Check done yearly! Unfortunately, once water ingress has developed it is to late, and by the time the van is out for spring damp and mold have advanced aggressively.
Sadly the customer of this 8 year old Baily Autograph had left the habitation Check because of a bad experience from a previously employed Habitation Engineer. Fortunately the owner came here and has been able to have the van looked after by Mtec Project, with the floor replaced to its original glory.
Unfortunately not all vans with such advanced damp are economically repairable!

A few things can happen over the storage period, one of which is frost damage.
In the year 2023 the UK suffered up to minus 10 degrees of which caused many Motorhome owners damage to there water system. One of our biggest problems we had repeatedly in the work shop was the Flojet water pump pressure switch. Flojet stated in there manual that this pump has to be completely empty of water for storage. This meant that the owner has to use the quick release tabs to remove the pump and empty it of all water. The small amount of water left in the pump would be very little but enough to freeze and split the pressure switch.
Similarly, the Thetford Toilet pump if frozen splits the plastic nut.
Having your Motorhome Habitation check will help combat failed parts from ruining your holiday.
